A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of hosting a social media workshop for Old Town Boutique District members. As a strategic marketing consultant, I work with a lot of small businesses in Old Town and spend a great deal of time educating and advising my clients on how to use social media to connect with their customers. During this workshop however, I experienced somewhat of a role reversal as I learned some really creative ways each of the different boutiques uses social media to share information.
If you want to be a boutique district insider, keep reading; what follows are just a few of the ways your favorite boutiques are using social media to connect with you:
1. Want breaking news? Follow them on social media.
This may seem fairly obvious, but unlike large businesses, a lot of the boutiques will reveal inside scoop on upcoming sales, new products, events and more through their social media accounts and not share this information anywhere else. If you want the real inside scoop, make sure to stay on top of each boutique’s Instagram stories. Real time information is shared through stories, but since stories are only live for 24 hours, the “you snooze, you lose” rule applies.
2. They want to hear from you.
It is always a best practice for businesses to find new ways to engage with their followers by asking questions, conducting polls, etc., but what you may not realize is that OTBD members never ask questions just to fill space. They really want to hear from you and get your opinion! The owners do read all of their comments and direct messages and take those opinions into account when making decisions. So next time your favorite boutique poses a question to their followers, answer it! Boutique owners are eager for your replies.
3. They want you to get to know them.
Social media is a great way for boutique owners to provide their followers and customers a sneak peek into their daily routines and lives. Boutique district members are female entrepreneurs who are doing the same juggling act we all do, trying to balance our work lives with our personal lives.
4. They help each other.
The boutiques all work together and support each other so make sure you are following all of the different members. Not finding what you want at one store or found a post from another boutique that featured a product you liked? Don’t be afraid to ask your favorite shop owner for recommendations from other stores. They love talking about fellow members and will guide you in the right direction.
5. Use their posts to get inspired.
The boutique owners are experts in the products they sell and the services they offer. You can learn so much about style, trends, fashion, design, and more by following them on social media. Look at how they are styling their products and the context of their posts. Unsure if an item they featured on their social feed will fit in with your current wardrobe or style, direct message them with questions and/or a photo. Better yet, swing by their store and ask them for their opinion in person. I can guarantee you that every owner will be more than delighted to help you!
So if you want to stay in the know, pay close attention to the Old Town Boutique District social pages and those of each of the members. In no time, you will be the keeper of boutique secrets and the go-to source for all of your friends.
