White before Memorial Day and after Labor Day? Seersucker before the weather reaches 90 degrees? Is this fashion etiquette a thing of the past? With the modern-day emphasis on style being more of an individualized concept, you might feel there are no hard-and-fast rules to follow when it comes to seasonal fashion. Still, if you’re more of a traditionalist, you might be afraid of showing up wearing the wrong thing or maybe you just like sticking to style guidelines (even if others say they’re outdated). Consider the following: We were all brought up with different viewpoints, influence and regions of the country but as you know, recent fashion trends prove some rules to no longer be true – i.e. white ankle boots were trending last fall/winter. So instead of focusing on the color – consider the material or fabric instead. White leather vs. white linen – that’s how you tell if you’re pushing the limit on what’s appropriate for the season. Off-white or winter white, as it’s often referred, is appropriate when wearing jeans, wool, corduroy and other heavier fabrics that serve their intended purpose of keeping you warmer than lighter fabrics meant for spring and summer.
One of my favorite fabrics is seersucker – a classic fabric originally used for men’s designer suits in Louisiana where the sweltering heat that’s already unbearable for most, was even worse for men wearing wool blend suits. This iconic light and airy, all-cotton fabric has since become fashionable over the years for children and women’s clothing as well. So do the same rules apply? Not before Memorial Day or after Labor Day – that’s a short 98 days this year? While many down South have been wearing seersucker since Easter Sunday, those in the Northeast may not due to the weather. We’ve had chillier Easter Sundays than warm ones in my recollection. I believe Seersucker doesn’t have a strict start and finish date. You may see seersucker on Easter Sunday and at the Kentucky Derby in early May. Whatever fashion etiquette is best for you – we have dresses, shoes and accessories to fit your style and budget. I hope you enjoy spring and Easter week.
