Today’s post was written by Danielle Romanetti, fibre space.
It’s that time of year when we reflect on the past and make resolutions to improve ourselves over the coming year. Might I suggest picking up a new “making” skill? When you finish your fast paced, smart phone and social media dominated day, there is nothing more soothing than creating with your hands. Here are my top picks for ways you can become a maker this year:
1. Take up letter writing
While we can so quickly & easily say hello to friends and family through Facebook, it is so much more meaningful to pick up a pen and write a note to someone that you love. Adorn the outside of the envelope in beautiful calligraphy & even pen a quick note on the inside. Penny Post has fountain pens from Kaweco and beautiful paper from Rifle Paper Co. If you are serious about taking up a year of hand written notes, consider stopping into Penny Post to order personal stationery from the likes of Crane and local lovely, Haute Papier.
2. Embroider something
Creating a small embroidery can be amazingly satisfying and easy to learn. The kits at Stitch Sew Shop come with all of the materials and instructions on how to create each type of stitch. I was surprised by how quickly I picked this up! Your completed piece can be framed or simply left in the wooden loom. They also make sweet gifts for those that deserve something that took a bit more time than a gift that you can buy!
3. Weave a tiny object
Weaving doesn’t have to involve a massive loom. Tiny weavings can make bracelets, wall hangings or even charms for a necklace. And while weaving can be surprisingly simple, it is also wonderfully soothing. Here at fibre space, we have all of these tiny loom kits, which include the tools that you need to create something in just an hour or so.
4. Make a charming sign for your home
The adorable second floor AR Workshop Alexandria can provide you with the tools, design and instruction to make your own plank wood sign, lazy susan or centerpiece box. You can customize your project with your choice of (non-toxic!) stain and designer paint colors. Bonus points if you leave with a little paint under your nails!
