Today’s post was written by Sara Lavan, Local Motion Studio.
1) When did you first start coming to the studio?
Emily: I started coming regularly a little over a year ago.
Melissa: Hmmm, has it really been five years ago?
Brooke: I think in 2013.
2) How did you find out about us?
Emily: I received a class pass from my mother in law as a birthday present. She knew that I had been looking to get back into a regular exercise routine after having two children.
Melissa: Can’t even remember it was so long ago. 🙂
Latoya: I learned about Local Motion from a community health fair at Alfred Street Baptist Church. They had free class cards from the studio on the table following a class demo at the health fair. I decided I would stop by because so many ladies enjoyed the class. I was working at the fair, so I did not get to attend the free demo.
Brooke: A friend recommended it.
3) What made you keep coming back?
Emily: The instructors are the BEST and I love the workout I get from the classes, the people I have met through the studio, and the childcare!
Melissa: Two things. Firstly, LMS offers the least intimidating environment of any place I’ve ever worked out. It feels intimate, and everyone is always friendly and inviting, but I also feel like I can run in and out without having to make small talk, or feel like I’m participating in a “scene.” Lots of people modify movement for their particular sensitivities or injuries, so I never feel singled out if I do the same, and I love the way the instructors automatically present suggestions for modifications. Secondly, the quality of the movement is amazing and empowering. I have never felt stronger or more in tune with my body. Whether in cardio, barre, core, pilates, etc., the movement is always thoughtful and purposeful. There are days when I arrive feeling broken (achy, sore, stressed, sleep deprived, whatever) and I literally feel like the class puts me back together again.
Latoya: The instructors are incredible, and each experience is different. Kat reminds me through yoga that the problems in life are not just limited to me; we all struggle; at the same time, it’s about taking care of yourself and your space. Sara, Silvia, and Christine remind me that no matter where you are starting with dance, or if it has been a while (since college for me) all are welcomed, it will be a good time, and we will learn the correct way.
Brooke: Instructors who care about their students and have fun, safe, and effective classes.
4) What is your favorite class?
Emily: I love all the Cardio classes that Local Motion offers. I can tell that I have gotten much stronger in the last year.
Melissa: That’s hard, because I enjoy all of them and appreciate the diversity of options offered throughout the week, so I can pick and choose depending on my schedule, how my body is feeling, and what my mood is like. Cardio Strength is probably the class I attend the most. I love how every instructor interprets the class differently. It’s always a great workout, the 60 minutes fly by, and I feel like I’ve accomplished something.
Latoya: Ballet. Christine and Silvia are amazing dancers and teachers. They also push you to grow and learn more about the art form all while enjoying yourself. I have a list of notes from ballet classes that I run through during the week and some of us have purchased ballet terms books. We also often text one another asking something like “…what was that step that came after the piqué turn…”
One of my most recent gratifying moments was when Christine showed us an arabesque turn for a combination. I tried it and she smiled from ear to ear and said “Yes! You got it! Yours looked better than mine…do that…” and everyone in class was excited. That’s what Local Motion is; an encouraging community!
Brooke: Aerial yoga and Cardio Strength.
5) What is one word you would use to describe the atmosphere here?
6) What is one thing you have learned since coming here?
Emily: My love of exercise! I have never been able to get into a regular routine until I started coming to Local Motion.
Melissa: That taking more than a few days off from movement wrecks my sleep and my mood. And how to initiate from my core to protect my back, my shoulders, my everything. 🙂
Latoya: Don’t limit yourself by your fears. Just go for it, you will be surprised what happens when you let go and let the movements happen.
Brooke: With consistent practice and dedication to movement, your body can move in ways you never thought possible.
