Acme Mid-Century + Modern carries a wide selection of unique, modern, and mid-century gifts, ranging from vintage to new. Some of our offerings can be found in the permanent collections of major museums, such as the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), and many offer a combination of aesthetic beauty and functionality that is one of the hallmarks of modern design.
1. The Starck Juicy Salif
A perfect example is the “Juicy Salif,” designed by Philippe Starck and made by Alessi in Italy:
While many people who see this iconic piece believe it to be a just a stunning sculpture, it is in fact a functional citrus juicer. I like to call it “the world’s most beautiful kitchen appliance.” Found in MOMA and other museums, this iconic piece makes a great gift or housewarming present.
2. The Lax Lytegem
Another great museum-worthy and functional piece is the iconic Lytegem High-Intensity Lamp. Designed by Michael Lax in 1965, this lamp is also featured in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). In 2003, for their 100th anniversary, the manufacturer, Lightolier, brought back a commemorative edition of the long-discontinued Lytegem.
Acme was fortunate to obtain a large batch of black new, unopened “new old stock” commemorative Lytegems — the proverbial “back of the warehouse find!” These are unopened and feature original packaging.
3. Vintage Japanese Senshukai “Royal Pet” Wood Animals
Another great gift option is our selection of vintage “Senshukai” wood animal figures. Inspired by Danish modern design, the Senshukai were hand-crafted in Japan during the 1960s. We have received several shipments from Japan in the last couple of weeks, in preparation for the holidays. Great for adults or older children, these are collectible gifts.
Acme currently has all 15 or so varieties, including some in the original boxes, and range from $50 to $75 each.
4. Nambé Secret Alloy Items
Over 50 years ago, a secret metal alloy was created at Los Alamos National Laboratory and developed by Nambé Mills. Today, this mystery alloy continues to be used to make a variety of kitchen and home goods, along with other fine materials. Acme is a dealer for new Nambé products, which include a number of great gifts for the home and kitchen, such as a rolling pin, wine racks, and a very cute piggy bank:
In addition to these cool items, Acme also has a selection of vintage and one-of-a-kind art works, sculptures, and other unique items!
